British Values and the Prevent Strategy

The DfE have recently reinforced the need “to create and enforce a clear and rigorous expectation on all schools to promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.” The government set out its definition of British values in the 2011 Prevent Strategy and these values have been reiterated by the Prime Minister this year. At Ladybridge Primary School these values are reinforced regularly. Each year group follows a curriculum which positively promotes the British Values as detailed below.

Democratic values are explicit in the ethos at Ladybridge Community Primary School. All adults listen to the views of the children and value their opinions. Our pupils have a voice through their 'Pupil Power' activities: these include the School Council and House Captains. Each role is elected through a democratic system of ‘voting’ providing a ‘voice’ for all pupils. Pupils are given the opportunity to have their ‘voices’ heard through pupil questionnaires, being listened to in class, assemblies and general discussions. Our school behaviour policy involves rewards and sanctions; this is shared through all aspects of school life and also shared with parents, carers and children from Reception to Year 6.

The Rule of Law

The importance of Laws, whether they be those that govern the class, the school, or the country, are consistently reinforced throughout regular school days, as well as when dealing with behaviour. Pupils are taught the value and reasons behind laws, that they govern and protect us, the responsibilities that this involves and the consequences when laws are broken. Visits from authorities such as the Police and Fire Service are a regular part of our calendar events and help reinforce this message. Children follow a positive behaviour policy and can clearly demonstrate an understanding of the rewards and sanctions that are used. Children are shown how they can contribute to the well-being of those in the locality and beyond, through many events such as supporting charities and local community partnerships.

Individual Liberty

Within school, pupils are actively encouraged to make choices, knowing that they are in a safe and supportive environment. As a school we educate and provide boundaries for all pupils to make choices safely, through provision of a safe environment. Pupils are encouraged to know, understand and exercise their rights and personal freedoms and are advised how to exercise these safely, for example through our E-Safety and PSHE lessons. We have Play Leaders and Champions of Consistency to foster good relationships between pupils and to promote fairness, and tolerance. Pupils are given the freedom to make a wide range of choices from attending extra-curricular clubs to supporting fund raising events.

Mutual Respect

Our school’s ethos and behaviour policy is to create a happy, secure and positive learning environment based upon a solid foundation of mutual respect. Assemblies promote the importance of self-respect, honest and open communication with others and fair play. Our children are taught to work collaboratively and value each other’s opinion. Adults throughout the school model and promote respect for others as do older children who have suitable, age related, tasks and responsibilities and this is reiterated through our classroom and learning rules, as well as our behaviour.

Tolerance of those of Different Faiths and Beliefs

At Ladybridge we are a culturally rich and diverse school where children have unique opportunities to learn from each other by sharing and celebrating their different faiths and cultures. Members of different faiths or religions are encouraged to share their knowledge to enhance learning within classes and the school. We also visit places and people within our local community. Assemblies and class work promote the diversity of society and the right for each person to be respected and valued equally. Members of different faiths are invited to school to share their knowledge and to enhance learning. We celebrate the diversity of our world and hold dedicated learning sessions to explore and understand about the wider world, its cultures and people.
